In D87, teaching and learning is a priority, but safety must also be prioritized. D87 educators have been planning, practicing, and updating school safety drills with first responders in each of the new and renovated schools. Annual safety drills in all schools include:
- Fire Evacuation
- Severe Weather
- Bus Evacuation
- Secure and Teach*
- Active Shooter Drills
(*Shelter in place procedures are implemented in the event of a police emergency near the school. A hazardous event in the area, like a chemical spill, could also require shelter in place procedures.)
All D87 staff are currently receiving ALICE training. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown & Barricade, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. The district is working on each component of ALICE. Learn more about ALICE training at www.alicetraining.com.
The district is also working on providing lessons for students and information for families. Parents and community members can access comprehensive safety information and procedures at www.berkeley87.org. (See Parents tab then School Closings/Safety.)
