Dear District 87 Families,
Thank you all for your patience as we finalized the plan to return to school. Tonight, Monday, July 27, the Board of Education voted to approve the Berkeley Blueprint: A Guide to Reopening Schools and its phased approach to reopening schools for the 2020-2021 school year.
The plan is as follows:
Phase 1: Remote Learning for All (first 9 weeks of school)
Phase 2: Remote or Hybrid Learning Model based on data from the first 9 weeks
Phase 3: Full Return (only when we reach Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois Plan)
Remote Learning for All Students will begin on Thursday, August 27th.
Please carefully review the Key Highlights document attached for important information about the start of the school year.
While we desperately want to see students return to schools in person, we recognize that the health and safety of our entire District 87 community must be our top priority. We understand the challenges facing families due to this extended period of remote learning and are working collaboratively with community partners to help provide support for those in need. We will continue to monitor public health data and guidelines to prepare for a safe return as soon as possible.
Our administrators, teachers, and staff are working diligently to prepare a Remote Learning experience for students incorporating feedback from the spring. We are committed to providing a structured, full day of learning for all students with increased daily interactions with teachers and higher levels of accountability. With greater flexibility from the state, we are confident that remote learning will be greatly improved for the fall.
In the coming weeks, full details of the Remote Learning Plan will be shared outlining specific expectations for families, teachers, and staff. Consistent and clear communication will be essential, so please be sure to update your contact information in Skyward.
The full Berkeley Blueprint, in English and Spanish, will be available on our website, along with other key information for the school year and a form for your questions/feedback. Please check back often for regular updates.
Sincerely,
Dr. Terri Bresnahan
Superintendent

Dear District 87 Families,
Thank you to the many families who participated in our Return to School Survey. We had over 900 responses! Your input was very helpful in making the difficult decisions around how to return to school this fall. The results from the survey are shown below.
The District has worked diligently this summer to review all data and develop a plan for our 2020-2021 school year. The following information helped guide the District’s planning process:
- Current public health conditions (data from the IL Dept of Public Health)
- Survey results from families and staff
- Guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education
- Guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The District will share its full plan next week, following the Board of Education meeting on Monday, July 27th.
We thank all parents and guardians for your patience and support as we develop a plan that prioritizes the health and safety of all students, staff, and our community.
