Whittier Events
On January 26, Whittier launched a school-wide recycling project, which is sponsored by SCARCE (School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education). The Whittier community has been donating crayons to our school that will eventually be sorted by color, peeled, and melted down into candle molds. These molds will be used to create much larger crayons that will benefit children with special needs, who would ordinarily be unable to grasp regular crayons. The Whittier staff will send the crayons to SCARCE on Earth Day, which is on April 22, 2010. Parents, we encourage you to donate crayons for this fundraiser. Thank you for your support!
Throughout the second quarter, our kindergarten through fifth grade students showed their creativity in writing stories for the Young Authors program. The Whittier community would like to congratulate the following District 87 Young Authors winners:
A. Uribe, Second Grade;
R. Almarales, Third Grade; and
S. Feliciano, Fifth Grade.
School grade level winners at Whittier were:
D. Rivera, Kindergarten;
I. Pena, First Grade; and
E. Rivera, Fourth Grade.
On February 19, 2010, the Whittier PTA and staff hosted Drive-In Movie Night. The movie presented this year was Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. We thank the Whittier PTA for their efforts in promoting the event, which raised funds for school related activities. The two Drive-In Movie Night events held this year have raised approximately $700.00! If you would like to find out more ways to become involved with the PTA, please stop by the school or feel free to reach us at 708-449-3175. Thank you parents for your continued support!
On March 18, 2010, the Whittier students, teachers, and parents will celebrate science education during the Whittier School Science Fair. Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students will display science projects they have conducted throughout this school year. In addition, Rockin’ Science will create several demonstrations for the Whittier community that combine music, motion, graphics, and hands on activities. The students and their parents will have opportunities to participate in several of the activities. Pizza and water will be served in the gym from 5:00 pm to 5:45 pm. The fair will start at 6:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you at this event!
We are very proud of our students. We look forward to celebrating future accomplishments during the remainder of the 2009-2010 school year.
